Adventures in Hang Gliding

Hang gliding is an air sport in which a pilot will fly a light aircraft which has no motor. The aircraft is controlled by the pilot shifting their body weight around from front to back and side to side, but other modern devices can also be used such as aircraft flight control systems. The pilot will wear a harness, and is hung beneath a lifting wing with flexible straps. Hang gliding is the closest way a human being can get to soar like a bird. Hang gliding can be safe if precautions are taken, and the individual is not acting in a careless manner.

The length of a hang gliding flight depends on many factors and conditions. Soaring flights can last for hours at a time, while sled runs, launching time, and landing take about 5 minutes. The speed that a person will fly is usually around 18 to 20 mph.

New and modern technology now gives pilots the ability to soar for hours and gain altitude, and they are able to fly cross country for many miles at a time. Lookout Mountain is a hang gliding training facility who teaches anyone with the desire to hang glide, with a weight limit of not over 250 pounds. They can be contacted at 706-398-3541.
