Hunting and Fishing in Texas

Texas ranks one of the top states in the nation for hunting and fishing opportunities. Texas has an abundance of fish and game, and it is a popular state to hunt and fish because of the abundance of rivers, lakes, and creeks. The Gulf of Mexico has around 624 miles of shoreline. This makes a popular site for avid anglers, or those who would like to take on a new fishing challenge on the waters of the Gulf Coast.

Along the Gulf Coast, you can find hundreds of different species of fish. Whether you are fishing with a lure or bait, you are sure to be challenged with popular fish such as, speckled trout, king and Spanish mackerel, marlin, tuna, red snapper, and grouper. Native freshwater game fish can be caught such as spotted bass, crappie, all types of catfish, and Guadalupe. Texas lakes and rivers are stocked with walleye, northern pike, flounder, and rainbow trout. Several Texas lakes have striped bass that will weigh in at 30 pounds.

Texas is known for its rather large ranches. The white-tailed deer is a very popular game animal that is hunted along with mule deer. Mule deer and pronghorns are usually found in West Texas. Wild boars, javelinas, feral hogs, and squirrel can also be hunted in this state. Quail, wild turkey, pheasants, dove, prairie chickens, and sand hill cranes are some of the game birds in this area.
