For those of you that enjoy gardening, composting is the best way to benefit the health of your plants. You can start a compost pile at the edge of your garden or the corner of your yard using leftovers and kitchen scraps, along with grass clippings, leaves or twigs, shredded paper, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, and food scraps. Do not put meat scraps, animal fat, colored paper, or diseased plants of any kind in your compost. Add some soil in between layers of compost. This helps the pile to decompose and speeds up the breakdown process. From this you will have an organic nutrient rich compost, and you can fertilize, mulch, and prevent weeds all from the same compost.
Composting benefits your garden in lots of ways by adding nutrients to the soil and making a better environment for your plants. It will help improve the soil structure, aeration, helps root growth, and keeps the soil from becoming so compacted.
You can choose to turn the pile or not. If you turn it, it will decompose much faster and be ready to use with in about 6 months. Otherwise it takes about a year for the pile to break down. Your compost is ready to use when it is dark and crumbles with a rich soil smell. This is the best thing you can do for your plants. They will love it, and best of all it is free!
