Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on animal blood, and can transmit disease, and cause allergies or anemia. There are more than 2,200 species of fleas recognized worldwide. Most of the fleas that are found on dogs and cats are either called dog fleas or cat fleas, but the most common found on both cats and dogs are "cat fleas".

Fleas cause severe irritation in other animals, and also humans. They can also transmit a wide variety of diseases, including tapeworm infections. Cat fleas begin reproduction about one or two days after they suck blood from their host. Female fleas lay eggs as they feed, and then move about on the surface of the skin. A single female flea can produce up to 50 eggs per day, and about 2,000 in her lifetime. The eggs can hatch in one to six days, so this becomes a continual cycle.

No wonder we see our pets scratching and biting themselves all the time. Flea larvae are capable of moving as far as three feet, to find locations suitable for their survival. The flea can jump on a human, and then you have the indoor flea problem. They survive in carpet, cracks, basements. Depending upon the temperature and humidity, the entire life cycle of the flea can be  completed in as little as twelve to fourteen days, and last up to 350 days. A flea infested animal, can introduce fleas into your home, where they will deposit eggs that develop into newly emerging fleas, that can infest other pets and also bite people.

Roses have been such an integral part of our culture for centuries. They are so closely associated with paintings, literature, and music, and a symbol of beauty.

No true flower lover is probably content without some kind of roses growing in their landscape or garden. Roses don't require that much care, and produce showy displays of flowers for weeks. There are over 10,000 worldwide varieties of roses, and one that will sure to please even the most finicky person.

When planting roses, they should be at least eighteen inches deep, not to exceed two to three feet. Roses do not do well in alkaline soil, because the iron in the alkaline soil is insoluble, and not available to plants. All garden plants require iron to form chlorophyll, and the absorption of iron is interfered with in a lightly alkaline soil.

You can acidify the soil by mixing in finely powdered sulfur, using about one to three pounds per 100 square feet. Peat moss will temporarily increase soil acidity if you apply large enough quantities. Roses should be planted at least three feet apart for regular rose bushes, and six to eight feet for climbers.

Mound the soil around the newly planted roses to keep the canes from drying out, while the root become established. Never buy roses that have started to put out white shoots, or canes that are shriveled or dry looking. You should always prune roses in the spring, but you can prune extra tall canes that are overgrown in the fall. When roses need to be fertilized, the leaves will start to turn a light yellowish green.
